You can safely delete this file. Nothing has it open or depends on it, this is where sendmail saves invalid messages (I don't remember the criteria). If you scrool down enough, you might see other messages that you recognize, otherwise delete it.

Hello -

I'm running HP-UX 11.11 on a rp5450. I was looking to do some cleanup and found that the dead.letter file in the root volume is rather large (8,380,417kb). When I do a more to view it, there are just pages of blank information.

Is this a file that I should be trimming or purging? If so, what is the safest way to do it?

Thanks
Mike

This file contains "undeliverable mail". If it's undeliverable, I can't see much of any reason to save it and would delete it.

Pete

Shalom Mike,

> filename

There is nothing special about this file. Its a sequential text file.

If you don't care to read the contents blow it away.

SEP

This is a mbox formatted file and you can use mailx to read it:
mailx -f dead.letter

Use "x" to exit without changes.
You can also use mozilla or thunderbird to read it.
