hp-ux 11.11 tape configuration error

I'm trying to add a tape on a 9000/785 system running hp-ux 11.11. ioscan can't see tape
# lssf /dev/rmt/0mn
stape card instance 3 SCSI target 4 SCSI LUN 0 at&t no rewind best density available at address ??? /dev/rmt/0mn
can anyone help me

Shalom,

Check the kernel driver configuration, see that the stape driver is installed. IF not, install it, compile a kernel and reboot the system.

insf -e

Should rebuild tape drivers that are missing.

Looks like your device file is still there, but the drive is missing.

How about an

# ioscan -fn

If not visible, check the tape drive, the cable and terminator on your (J-class ?) workstation.

commad ioscan and insf i can't see nothing.
cable unit an so on are ok, on the same machine I can boot from tape

by the way what is the model of the tape dribe can u tell . the drive and connectivity is OK as u say u can boot the system with that. are u able to boot the same system with that.

appreciated if u can post the whole #ioscan -fn

complete O/P.

also just try to check if u have the tape driver etc configured in the kernel , u can see that in the module section of the kernel.

please post the ioscan -fn O/p of the system

This is obvious from the ioscan O/P that ur system has two SCSI Buses which are as follows:

ext_bus 2 10/0/15/0 c720 CLAIMED INTERFACE SCSI C896 Ultra Narrow Single-Ended
this is a Single Ended SCSI BUS

ext_bus 3 10/0/15/1 c720 CLAIMED INTERFACE SCSI C896 Ultra2 Wide LVD
THis is a u2w SCSI Bus that has got the SCSI HDD connected to it and that disk is:
disk 1 10/0/15/1.6.0 sdisk CLAIMED DEVICE HP 18.2GST318406LC
/dev/dsk/c3t6d0 /dev/rdsk/c3t6d0

so ur tape drive as u might have connected should be connected to 10/0/15/0 if this has Narrow I/F and to
10/0/15/1 if this has got a u2w interface.

ioscan -fnCtape should at least show the tape device even if the tape Driver moduke is not there in the kernel.

just please check that u have got the SCSI Bus terminated properly with the terminator on the Tape Devices , sometimes that is reqd on the system for proper sensing of the Tape device.

stape shows also in ur earlier O/p shows that is connected to card instance 2 that is c3.

please check the SCSI ID pf thetape drive and also put a terminator in there.
also check that in kernel u have got the Module (what driver is there , this could be tape2,tape3 or tape even stape )

please check for the SCSI termination.

can the Tape be connected to 10/0/15/0 which seem sto be External SCSI port.

I have tested the tape cable and terminator on a other system an i result ok.

u cai see from ioscan

I have remounted the tape on the other system,
at boot halted automatic boot
whith sea command identified the tape and booted whith command
boot P2
then
I suppose that cable tape and terminator are ok I have installed the pacth PHKL_34552 for eventually correction same problems.
Connected the tape at identical system (same OS version)
same problem, cant see tape

Summary
tape run on 11.0
tape dont run on 11.11

can u run sam and include the driver and module stape and tape to include once again in the kernel.

also can u install the other kernel patches as seen as the SCSI patches in the itrc

i have installed whith sam the driver in kernel just before attach tape on scsi.
the output of the commend required:
# lsdev -C tape
Character Block Driver Class

are you sure you're connecting the drive to the LVDS interface? According to the specs I see, that tape drive (C5683A) is LVDS / 68 pin only.
