In short you need to learn few thing and put your hands into it:

- Sample program. (write a 5 line script)
Like:

# vi script1.sh

#!/usr/bin/sh
echo "Hello World!"
echo "This is my first shell script"
echo "---------------"
echo "Today's it is : `date` "
#---------------------

- Control Flow.
- Operators.
- Assignment Operators, Logical Operators.
- Looping.
- if then else fi / for do done / case esac / while do done / while /until /
- test operators.
- function.
- formating.
- shell maths.

Also to go advance once you are happy with shell it would be interesting to go with sed and awk along with it.
