Dear all,

I am moving my RAC 10gR2 from PA-Risc 11.11 to Itanium 11.31 with native multi-pathing.
created 6 disks 30Gb each from EVA4400 for this server
in 11.31 the devices
itauxdev:[root]:[TWO_TASK=OCP]:/dev/rdisk
#ll
total 0
crw-r----- 1 bin sys 23 0x00000a Jun 18 10:27 disk11
crw-r----- 1 bin sys 23 0x00000b Jun 19 11:26 disk16
crw-r----- 1 bin sys 23 0x000000 May 6 12:37 disk4
crw-rw-r-- 1 oracle dba 23 0x00000c Jun 19 15:26 disk41
crw-rw-r-- 1 oracle dba 23 0x00000d Jun 19 15:26 disk42
crw-rw-r-- 1 oracle dba 23 0x00000e Jun 19 15:26 disk43
crw-rw-r-- 1 oracle dba 23 0x00000f Jun 19 15:26 disk44
crw-rw-r-- 1 oracle dba 23 0x000010 Jun 19 15:26 disk45
crw-rw-r-- 1 oracle dba 23 0x000011 Jun 19 15:26 disk46

chmod and chown 664 and oracle:dba
but on my ASM installation, Oracle could not detect the disks. However, if i went back to the old way using

itauxdev:[root]:[TWO_TASK=OCP]:/dev/rdsk
crw-rw-r-- 1 oracle dba 188 0x060300 Jun 20 20:22 c6t0d3
crw-rw-r-- 1 oracle dba 188 0x060400 Jun 20 20:22 c6t0d4
crw-rw-r-- 1 oracle dba 188 0x060500 Jun 20 20:22 c6t0d5
crw-rw-r-- 1 oracle dba 188 0x060600 Jun 20 20:22 c6t0d6
crw-rw-r-- 1 oracle dba 188 0x060700 Jun 20 20:22 c6t0d7
crw-rw-r-- 1 oracle dba 188 0x061000 Jun 20 20:22 c6t1d0
chmod and chown 664 and oracle:dba
and ASM installation would detect those disks just fine.
Would someone please correct me if i did someting wrong here or it was not the correct way to use the new disks /dev/rdisk/disk41 to 46

Thanks for your helps!
Tom

Tom,

Did you change the ASM parameter ASM_DISKSTRING to point at the new disks. I'm guessing it defaults to /dev/rdsk.

Have you reviewed the whitepapers on best practices for the EVA with ASM available here:

http://h71028.www7.hp.com/enterprise/cache/324315-0-0-0-121.html#oracle

HTH

Duncan

You may want to create alternate device files using mksf and configuring Oracle to use those instead. Otherwise the permissions could get reset after a reboot. Plus using alternates allows a more descriptive name, such as /dev/oracle/asm/db1. In that case set ASM_DISKSTRING=/dev/oracle/asm/* and it should be able to detect them.

Kevin

Thank-you Duncan and kevin,

Duncan, i did change the location to /dev/rdisk
and chown to oracle:dba but it could not detected the disks.
Kevin, on linux, yes it would change permission
if i did not follow your instruction but it is fine on Unix. I've used it for the last 3 yrs.

i just wonder if anyone uses /dev/rdisk for ASM in Oracle 10g.

regards,
Tom
Check Oracle's reference to ASM and multipathing at http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/linux/asmlib/multipath.html. It's geared for Linux but still applicable to HP-UX in some respects.

Kevin

---> hi,I met the same environment.but my question is the disk in the two server displayed did not point to the same lun.

it should point to the same LUN but the device file may be different. in this case use mknod to create a new device file for both nodes.
Hope this help!
