topic Memory related issue in Operating System - HP-UX

Hi guys,

I have a Rx 7620 server running HP 11iv2.

The system has 6GB of free memory, yet about 7% of the swap space is also used (total available swap space is about 5GB).

Is this normal? Isn't the system supposed to be using the free physical memory instead of swap space?

If this is not normal, how do I correct it?

Thanks

Yes, I would say it is normal. Your better bet it to see if you are actually doing any page outs. You can see that via glance or vmstat. Swap allows you to act as if you have more memory than you have physically. And by doing this you can run more programs than what you actually have for physical memory. Since the OS has to actually have the amount of memory that each process requires it reserves that memory, just in case it would need to swap out a full program from memory to disk. So basically the swap usage is more likely showing what has been reserved, not what is actually being used for pages. I hope that made sense, I understand it better in my head than trying to explain it. I am sure someone else will chime in with a more clear answer.

dear
it is 100 percent ok
regarding u memory check
u can use swapinfo -tam command
then key factor u have to check there is
total reserve memory etc...
once u have memory shortage u have to find the root cause
before that u have to know the physcial memory installed in u system
u can use
dmesg | grep -i phys
command for this
swap should be the twice of the physical memory
also if u config.ok then u feel memory shortage the best solution is
u have to create new device swap
ok. one more if due to application size only u can consult with application team also

sajjad
