topic first cluster in Operating System - HP-UX

Hi all,

Ill be setting up my first HPuX SG cluster in the near future and I would like to know if I understand the basics and how I can use SG in our configuration.

We have two hpux 11iv2 servers that will are supposed to be in a cluster configuration. The cluster is not meant for high availbility but for load balancing and performance which is why I am not sure that SG is the right choice for this setup.

The server's will be running ORACLE Application Server 10g2 (Portal and Wireless + J2ee + webcache) and BEPEL Process Management. I have not seen any of them in action before so I am almost at a complete loss.

Can ServiceGuard in the above situation provide load balancing features or does Oracle Application Server take care of all this?

I have read the Managing SG 12th edition as well as some threads on this forum and have not found it to be able to help in the above situation.

Any help, comments or general information is greatly appreciated.

Many thanks!

//Marius
Hi,

MC/SG is not for Load balancing. This is purely for high availability.

To state your statement more clear, For load balancing (to imporve your performance of user requests you will be having 2 App Servers connecting to one DB. So need to have some network load balancers or software one. I am sure that the Network Load Balancers will be better, which does the load balancing w/o loading the Apps Server.

Hope this helps

Chan
Thanks Chan. I am looking for confirmation that ServiceGuard is not needed/useful in the above configuration.

I do however have one server (rx1620) that will have Oracle DB 10g2 installed. At one point we will have another identical server. Can I install and configure ServiceGuard and the extension for RAC and configure the cluster without the second half?

Thanks for the help.

Hi Marius,

I recon configure cluster - package with one node cluster and add the next one (when you have the other server later) that will be easy.

Chan
