Hi:

Is it possible to turn a non-heartbeat network into a hearbeat network for a cluster (to have an additional heartbeat) while the cluster is running, without stopping cluster service? Thanks for your comments.

Jose Enrique
Caracas, Venezuela
I believe for the heartbeat to be valid, you'll need to stop and start the cluster.

Thats the way the procedure is in the Service Guard manual. Of course in class its not a problem, but it makes sense.

If all your packages are set for proper failover, you may be able to do a cmhaltnode, change the configuration and then cmrunnode to rejoin the cluster.

Then do the same thing on the next node.

That is not something I'd be comfy doing in a production environment however.

SEP

Hello Jose,

According to the Managing ServiceGuard manual, in the chapter on "Cluster and Package Maintenance" there is a section called "Reconfiguring a Cluster." One of the tables in this chapter lists all of the changes you can make to a cluster and whether the cluster may be running or not during the change. One of the table items states:

Change IP addresses for heartbeats or monitored subnets -- Cluster must not be running.

The Managing ServiceGuard manual is available at:

http://docs.hp.com/hpux/onlinedocs/B3936-90079/B3936-90079.html

Hope this helps,

Dave

This is NOT one of the online reconfiguration tasks that are available.
You will have to halt the cluster, make the change and reapply the binary I am afraid.

Hi Caracase,

No, you can't do while cluster is running, stop the cluster start the network heartbeat and restart the cluster.
