For modern drivers/devices, "sar -d" %busy and avque numbers can be misleading. I advise to use only the other number (r+w/s, blks/s, avwait and avserv) in the output, or, as others have mentioned, iostat(1), or, better, Glance.

sar -d 10 6

will show disk activity every 10 seconds over 1 minute.

Otherwise you can use measureware to collect stats over time or Glance to get real-time figures for each disk, also Glance gives you i/o by logical volume and filesystem which you cannot get otherwise.

iostat 10 6 will show you activity for disks on HP-UX, but not busy%.

iostat exists here too.

Another useful built-in command is sar -d interval count

-Sri

Jay

the basic command is sar -d x y where x is the no of times you want to run after every y seconds. this can be run in cron to collect data . However there are tools like perf view which can record disk activity over a long period of time .

Also in case you have EMC frame then you can use vendor specific utilities like ( powermt display ) to know waht is teh activity going on

Manoj Srivastava
