X Server

Hi.
I am installing Oracle 9i on HP-UX 11.0 Server. I am using a local console to administer Unix (without graphic interface and x server). For Oracle Installer to display its graphical output I need to specify X Server ip adress and X Window number.
There are no other unix based servers, or consoles.
Is there a solution? Can I use a PC as X Server?

You can use a PC if it's running some sort of X emulation software like Reflections or Exceed.

You can use a PC if you are having some X-emulation software like Exceed from Hummingbird.

Hi,

You can use a PC with Reflection/x
Exceed or any X-server software.
Before you start the install-job you
must export the DISPLAY environment-variable
to point to the host where you want to display.
Example
export DISPLAY=mypc:0.0

We have plenty of machines without a graphic console running X

Start up CDE
Change before

/etc/dt/config/Xservers

If not there copy from /usr/dt/config

Comment out last line
tail /etc/dt/config/Xservers
# 108

# * Local local@console /usr/bin/X11/X :0

then CDE will not try to start on console.

Install Xmanager
http://tucows.sympatico.ca/tucows/preview/195639.shtml

from here.
Install it.

start it using
start---->Programs-->Xmanager--->Xmanager

it will list out of ip of unix machines with xdmcp broadcast.

Login to the unix server.

#DISPLAY=:0.0
#export DISPLAY

Get a copy of vnc from the link below - possibly one of the most usefull tools for IT departments since the invention of the sandwich toaster.

This will let you use "X" GUI's from a PC but will also let you control other PC's. Works well with HP-UX.

Its free as well !!

I've tried xmanager...
I select unix server, type username, password, see usual welcom info from unix, and then the screen closes (crashes?).

Any ideas what causes this behavior?

In your CDE login welcome screen

In the options menu choose

option-->session-->failsafe session

Now login into the server
