Hi Jerome,

I'd say that both are valid, depending on the circumstances.

The 'within package' option ensures that you only have one copy and means that you don't have to maintain several instances. This is sensible if you only have one package that uses it. However, if you have more than one package that uses it then having it in a 'common' filesystem can save you diskspace.

I administrate several clusters where both strategies have been adopted for Oracle server software.

Hope this helps,

Regards,
John

Hello.

Where do we have to install the executables for an application included in a package (not the data files)?
Once in a VG associated with this package, or several times in a VG of each of the cluster nodes?

According to SG documentation the first solution seems to be the right one, but an HP representative working with us opted for the second one.

TIA, Jerome

Hi, Jerome !

My cluster has various copies of the executables, but I don't think it's good. I spend many time with maintenance. In my case, I'd like to change this situation.

But I agree with John when he says that both are valid depending on the circumstances.

Leila

Hello Jerome,
support might be the point to fix your decision on.
I have seen occasions, when Oracle did not answer
support questions, as long as the codefiles were
switched ("it's an HP problem"), but HP was not
allowed to answer Oracle problems :-( Pretty bad for
the customer... So, check your support and license
conditions (two copies of the codefiles meant two
licenses for Oracle - twice the money ;-).
HTH,
Wodisch
