Hi all,

When we were using VUE, I could highlight a line of text from a window with my left button, and then use right click to retrieve the output. This would be extremely useful.

Now we are on CDE. You can highlight some text with my left button and click the middle button in a different window, which works fine. However, if you highlight some text, and then say - vi a file in the same window (ie - the highlighted text is no longer on the screen), middle click - it does not retreive the text.

I really don't want to be having to right click and, select edit blah blah if I can help it.

Any ideas ?

We are running HPUX 11.00 and CDE which use dtterm windows.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Russel,

you can simply select the text to be remembered, and then use both mouse buttons to put it anywhere or the middle mouse button if you have a three button mouse.

Allways stay on the bright side of life!

Peter

Hi Russell,

When vi loads it clears the screen - selected text & all. The way I get around this is to use an intermediary window to drop the selected text into. Then I can retrieve it from there, whenever.
I believe you run into the same thing when the screen scrolls a certain # of lines as well - you'll lose the selected text.
AFAIK, there's no way around the screen clearing.

Rgds,
Jeff

Thanks chaps but I am saying that this DOES NOT WORK ...

You can highlight some text with the left button and click the middle button in a different window, which works fine. However, if you highlight some text, and then say - vi a file in the same window (ie - THE HIGHLIGHTED TEXT IS NO LONGER ON THE SCREEN)
, middle click - it does not retreive the text

or is it just me ???

I should clarify.....
Drop the text in the other window BEFORE you open the vi session.
Else you could scroll down just far enough to get the selected text out of the window before you start vi, as it will only clear the current screen.

Jeff

Hi Russell,

That bugs me too. However, if you choose to use dtterm sessions instead of hpterm, you get a menu bar with an Edit option. This contains a drop down menu with copy and paste options. You can also use <CTRL>+<INSERT> to copy and <SHIFT>+<INSERT> to paste.

Darrell</INSERT></SHIFT></INSERT></CTRL>
