can a password be placed in the scp command, and if so where would it go inn this command:
scp apollo:/u06/rman_backup/* .

Which is your "the scp command"?

ssh -V

man scp

Most ssh/scp/sftp clients were designed with
some basic security in mind, so they tend to
accept passwords interactively, but don't
make it particularly easy to use a password
which is stored in a script.

Why shun the usual public-key authorization
scheme for ssh/sftp/scp?

in this case i would recomend you to use password less auth for this.

Or do a Forum (or Web) search for keywords
like, say:

password ssh
or:
passwordless ssh

to find some of the dozens (or hundreds) of
other previous discussions of these kinds of
arrangements. (Some of which even include
output from "uname -a" and/or "ssh -V", so
that the reader might get some clue as to the
systems and software being used.)
