topic DB Farm (DB Consolidation) Possible on RAC or SGeRAC? in Operating System - HP-UX

I have proposed (and it's sorta been accepted) that we separate Applications/Processes from Databases on our currently multi-region environments - large regional environments with each either on a vPar'ed Dome or RP8420.

My proposal is to house some 7-9 large DB instances (3-5 TB each) onto a clustered rx8640 pair (or trio). Each DB instance will have dedicated FC Channels and network connectivity to the Apps nodes, etc. willbe via trunked network (4x1GB).

My question is .. CAn Oracle RAC or SGeRAC support multiple DB's ? Is this even a viable ? ANy words of advice?
Anyone?

My Question is simply -- CAn Oracle RAC or SGeRAC support multiple DB instances? Or is it recommended to just have one DB instance per cluster?

Thanks a Mil!
Nelson,

Yes SGeRAC and/or RAC can support multiple DB instances... the real decision here is what your Oracle stack looks like - i.e. all Oracle clusterware (using ASM), or SGeRAC, and if SGeRAC, then using SLVM, ASM over SLVM, CVM, or CFS over CVM.

You mentioned vPars in the mix there. Be aware that currently Oracle RAC is not qualified in a 'dynamic' vPars configuration (i.e. one where the number of CPU cores changes whils RAC/clusterware is up).

HTH

Duncan

Duncan,

Thanks and exactly the answer I was looking for. You mentioned RAC (and SGeRAC?) is currently not supported within Dynamic CPU environments (i.e. vPars) - can you pls. point me to a document stating so?

We've not yet decided whether to use just RAC (and Oracle's ClusterWare_ or even SGeRAC but it will most likely be CFS of CVM if I loose out on the RAW versus Cooked Battle.

Shalom,

Of course Oracle RAC or RAC with SG can support multiple DB's. Factors to check:

1) Adequate memory on active node for all simultaneously open instances.
2) Adequate disk space.
3) Adequate I/O bandwidth
4) Have a plan for distributing I/O evently.
5) Does the application support active-active database if you want this feature.

SEP

Nelson,

It's not very explicit, but its mentioned here:

http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/clustering/certify/tech_generic_unix_new.html

Note it states 'static vPars' are supported.

WRT to CFS vs. raw - I take it you've seen the whitepaper here which compares raw vs. CFS with ODM:

http://h71028.www7.hp.com/ERC/downloads/4AA1-2527ENW.pdf

HTH

Duncan

Nelson,

I would add that the lack of support for dynamic vPars is a qualification thing (i.e. the HP and Oracle teams haven't done the tests yet), rather than a 'doesn't work' thing. As I understand it, qualification will be forthcoming early next year..

HTH

Duncan
