It's HP's approach to a High Availability cluster and can run on either HP-UX or Linux.

The idea is that clients don't connect to a host's static IP address byut rather to a "package" IP address that can move among various hosts in the cluster. A package has resources : typically Volume Groups and/or diskgroups and an IP address. These resources migrate from a failed node to a standby node.

What is Serviceguard?
Serviceguard allows you to create high availability clusters of HP 9000 Series 800 computers. A high availability computer system allows application services to continue in spite of a hardware or software failure. Highly available systems protect users from software failures as well as from failure of a system processing unit (SPU), disk, or local area network (LAN) component. In the event that one component fails, the redundant component takes over. ServiceGuard and other high availability subsystems coordinate the transfer between components.
An ServiceGuard cluster is a networked grouping of HP 9000 series 800 servers (host systems known as nodes) having sufficient redundancy of software and hardware that a single point of failure will not significantly disrupt service. Application services (individual HP-UX processes) are grouped together in packages ; in the event of a single service, node, network, or other resource failure, ServiceGuard can automatically transfer control of the package to another node within the cluster, allowing services to remain available with minimal interruption.

Service Guard is a separate install and costs for a license.

You might want to know some definitions before getting started.

Cluster
Forming a Cluster: 2 node, more than 2 nodes
Split-Brain during Cluster formation
Heart Beat network link
Package
Monitor
Failover node.
Disk Volume - Cluster aware or exclusive assignment options, these are Volume Group options when new when SG is installed.

You also need to understand networking, Arp, etc.

Serviceguard is HP's Clustering Solution used on the HP-UX and Linux Operating System platforms.
It has been around for 12 years now, and has had added functionality over the years.
The current version is A.11.18
If you buy MCOE for HP-UX, it includes Serviceguard, otherwise it is a separately purchaseable and licensaeable product.
