Samba - smbd stop and start problem

Hi,

I??m trouble with samba. When I sent the command "smbd stop" and then a "ps -fu root | grep smb" I saw "smbd stop" running forever and do not remove file smbd.pid. A similar problem happens when I send the command "smbd start", this process never die. I think the process that must be running continuosly is only smbd, it seens like samba is not starting and stopping correctly.

Any ideas ?

Cheers,
Mauro

It's strange. Can you kill the smbd process by "kill -9 <PID of="" smbd="">" and start the smbd again? If you again face the same problem use "truss -p <PID of="" smbd="" process=""></PID></PID>

Hi,
On my side, to start /stop smbd, I'm not do it in a clean way but it works :
to start , I just use smbd command, I m running also nmbd by hand...
To stop, I kill processes smbd + nmbd

I don't think that parameter start /stop is taken in account with smbd....

hope that help
BEnoit

Don't need to care about the smbd.pid file? When you again start the smbd process the process ID will be overwritten by the new process ID. You can even delete the file. The file will be recreated when you start the smbd.

You can find out truss/tusc software here,

http://hpux.cs.utah.edu/hppd/hpux/Sysadmin/tusc-7.3/

As you have hpux 10.20 you can use trace software. You can use this link to download the trace software,

http://hpux.cs.utah.edu/hppd/hpux/Sysadmin/trace-1.6/

Trace is just like tusc package.

Sorry to say, but smbmount is not available for HP-UX 10.20. You need HP-UX 11 and up to use smbmount or cifsmount if you use the CIFS package from HP.

But you can still use smbclient to access the windows shares. This works like a ftp client.

Hope this helps

Regards Stefan
