There is no particular field that is best in this world, or else all of us would be going into that area.
I would say it is best that you find out what is your interest or more keen at. Stepping into the IT world is huge and overwhelming. For me, i am still trying hard to learn but nevertheless, most importantly, keep up that learning mind. Good luck!

I admit to bias here but I have found that mathematics (especially calculus) will always serve you well. Math, especially applied math, forcces you to think critically. I don't place a lot of emphasis on learning particular computer languages because, in general, those are quite easy to learn on your own. On the other hand, if you are offered chances to take courses in algorithms and data structures those will be very helpful in developing your skills.

In today's world, a few business courses are a good idea as well.

Goodness......... Where to start.... There are a number of areas within the IT industry that could be looked at in a variety of platforms:

System administration
Programming
Web design
technical planning and design

I think that variety is the spice of life, so consider not putting all of your eggs into one basket. You may want to experiment, go on different courses, read different material.

Hi,

Repeating what I mentioned in the other thread (I think it was you who originated the thread as well), my personal opinion is that it is good investment to take up multiple (usually 2) disciplines (e.g. MBA & IT or Life Sciences & IT or Financial Engineering & IT). The market is in need of people who understand the business well enough to implement business rules through IT correctly and effectively.

And having multiple disciplines usually gives you more flexibility in choosing between the technical path (e.g researcher, consultant, trainer etc) or the managerial path later on in life.

Hope this helps. Regards.

Steven Sim Kok Leong

Hi,

I once had some valuable advice from a teacher at school:

Find something you really enjoy doing, then develop your skills at it until an employer will pay you lots of money to do it.

It worked for me.

John
Balance, balance, balance.

Pure IT may be the most fun, but IT needs to be balanced with business, as we write business cases to support equipment needs and as we craft and implement security policies that balance security and production.

Even within IT, try different functions. The more you understand how other roles work, the better you will be in your own role.

Tom

Hi Henry,

first of all to say: Everything is worht to learn it in IT! You can use all the knowledge you have one day... If your question is focussed on HP-UX, there are really good courses designed by HP to learn everything on HP-UX:

--> using the operating system
--> system management I
--> system management II
( Official requirements to get the knowledge to be able to pass HP- certification )

--> shell programming (VERY useful if you have to work with UNIX/Linux)

--> troubleshooting and tuning HP-UX
--> HP-UX for advanced administrators

and so on...... I am working as HP-UX- trainer in germany and in my opinion the trainings are very good!

Allways stay on the bright side of life!

Peter
