Shalom Chuck,

You have to do a clean installation, of the Oracle forms version you want to use.

Then you have to migrate and test all your forms.

Your developers are not supposed to be forced to make a ton of code changes. Without a good test plan it will be a tough move.

The newer forms servers memory use is nothing sort of frightful. Last time I did this we ran the servers with 8 GB of RAM.

SEP

Well, I've not done exactly what you're asking, but I've moved forms servers from HPUX to Linux (even bigger move, I think).

My strategy was first to move the forms over at the same level I was on HPUX, then upgrade to where I wanted to be.

So, if I was on HPUX at forms level xxx at patchlevel yyy, then what I was going to do was put the same exact forms server and patch level down on Linux, then try to get a base level feel as if many things were working OK. I'd try some of the more fancy/complicated/esoteric forms examples and extensions and see if they were OK, along with a number of the big yet plain ol' forms.

Afterwards, I did the upgrade(s), then a full round of testing to certify that everything was still OK.

At this point, it was necessary to do A LOT of performance metering to determine how much of the new hardware platform was needed to stand up a new solution. All I can say about this is that this step was the BIGGEST, and unexpectedly so, both in the amount of work necessary and the results from the modeling.
So, my final bit of wisdom-via-direct experience is that you should make sure that don't leave out performance testing!

Good Luck!

Hi Chuck,

A good start will be to open some form source files (fmb) in the new version, compile and generate them. You will then have an idea of the time you may need to do this.

Best Regards,

Eric Antunes

Hi Chuck

I assume that you are going from Web Forms to Web Forms and not from Forms Client Server to Web Forms. We have done a number of Forms conversions from Forms Server 2 (Forms 5) and Forms 6i

We have picked up a few problems with the orderring of triggers, where for axample the pre-insert now kicks in after validation. Also the behaviour of timers has changed between versions.

When calling Reports from within forms you now have to use RunReportObject as RunReportProduct is deprecated. If your Oracle Reports use Parameter Forms to call them, this apparently is no longer supported either.

Although we don't use Graphs there are known problems with that too, but I am not sure what.

Lastly if you are calling any third party applications from within your Forms, make sure there are versions for Itanium, this was our greatest headache.

HTH

Andrew Y
Hi Chuck.

Other issues my developers reminded me about were the following:

Screen sizes were an issue for clients with smaller monitors as the 10G forms tend to display larger than previous versions.

In addition if you have a lot of buttons on the Form, the Form will open slowly while these are downloaded. There is a way of packaging these within a .jar file which solves this.

Lastly there was a client issue where the newer version of JInitiator needed Local Administrator rights to initially install.

HTH

Andrew Y

hi Chuck,

Allow me to also add, that there also exists some issues concerning database versions to which your application will be connecting.

what database version are you using?

I would also recommend that you verify all your forms prior to the migration.

good luck!
kind regards
yogeeraj
