Thanks Torsten, I've read the release notes before posting the questions. I understand the upgrade tasks however the documents do not provide me with the details I want.

Hello everyone,

I plan to upgrade HP-UX 11.23 0603 -> HP-UX 11.23 0609 on VM host. Integrity VM A.01.20.00 is installed in the existing HP-UX 11.23 0603. Its release note doesn't mention anything about the impact of HP-UX upgrade to this version of Integrity VM, neither does HP-UX 11.23 0609 release note vice versa. Will VM host and guests still run after HP-UX upgrade?

Eventually what I want to do is to upgrade Integrity VM A.01.20 to A.03.00, which requires HP-UX 11.23 0609.

Any help or thoughts?
Thanks a lot,
Lorne

Read the HPVM version 3 release notes - it's all there!

You need to upgrade HP-UX first, followed by an upgrade of HPVM to version 3 or version 2 at least (you really should consider to upgrade HPVM to a more current version).

FYI,

Just did the same HPUX upgrade to 1 VM host and 2 VM guests for the same reason ( wanted IVM v3 ).

Host upgrade went fine.
1st guest went fine
2nd guest blew up in middle during the request for 2nd CD. Had to rebuild the 2nd guest from Ignite to recover.

I cannot say anthing more than "good luck"

Hi Tim,

Thank you for your information. Do you indicate that VM guest needs upgrade to the same HP-UX version as VM host? From reading some documents, my understanding is that there should be no impact to VM guest.

Can you shed some lights on it?

have a great Monday,
Lorne

I read in the notes that the requirement is valid for the host - the guest probably needs some patches (see table 2-2 http://docs.hp.com/en/T2767-90076/ch02s01.html#d0e1149 )

But IMHO it is a good idea to keep the guest current as well.

The upgrade to the september release was a requisite to IVM V3.

If the VM Host is at V3 then it would be a best practice that the guests be at V3, then each would require the sept release of HPUX 11iv2 as well.

Thanks everyone for your input. I made up my plan about the IVM upgrade; here gathered is some information for other people's benefit:
1. HP-UX needs to be 11.23.0609 on VM host;
2. Integrity VM upgrade directly from v1 -> v3;
3. VM guest can run HP-UX 11.23.0505 or later for IVM v3;
4. VM Guest Management Software needs to be (re)installed on VM guest servers.

By doing so, this thread is closed.
have a good weekend,
Lorne
