The temperature thresholds depend on the particular server type, and it's measured internally, so I don't think it would help you to know anyway. The value would depend on ambient temperature and airflow. Your computer room is too hot, is the simple summary.

More discussion of this can be found here - http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=1132574

Andrew

I am receiving overheating warnings on my rp2470 server. What I need to know is how are these warnings triggered. Is there a table that says that 95 degrees triggers a critical and 100 degrees triggers an emerg and shuts down the system? Where are these parameters defined?

My supervisor is asking at what temperatures are these levels defined and is there a type of thermostat within the server that measures these temperatures?

thanks...Jay

I tried to get this information from HP after having the unfortunate event of having a few of our chillers die at the same time and the computer room went above 103 degrees. Most of our servers had shut down already. They were very general since we have a varity of different pieces of hardware but I was told it was around 95 degrees. Just looking at the manual for your server:
http://www.docs.hp.com/en/2411/rp24xx_customer.pdf

The Maximum Operating Range is:
5o C to 39o C
(41o F to 102o F)

But I'm not sure if at 102 it shuts down? I guess thats my assumption.

Eventualy, your box will shut down - I lost 2 fans in my rp7410 - this was the second to last message in syslog before it went down:

May 31 23:26:27 svr004 /usr/sbin/envd[5644]: ***** OVERTEMP_EMERG WARNING *****
May 31 23:26:27 svr004 /usr/sbin/envd[5644]: Temperature exceeded the OVERTEMP_CRIT threshold. Correct the over-temperature condition immediately.

Rgds...Geoff

I get the idea that my box is going to shut down at some point. What my question is: how and where is it defined what temperature triggers the warnings for the different levels of warnings and eventually shutting down the system. Is there a table that is set up in stm, Maint Console, ?????

thanks....

I don't think there is any table. At least not that the end user has access to. Being they pointed me to the manuals my guess is from server to server its hard coded in the firmware at what point it starts to shut down. I don't think they would want people adjusting it anyhow. (Not that you are asking to adjust it)

In your case, I'm not sure if 102 is the magic number.

The manual I thought stated that its the internal temperature of the machine, which makes me believe the thermostat is within the chassis.

The thresholds are hardware dependent. See envd(1M) for some information. Since it's hardware dependent, there may be some documentation in the hardware manuals regarding these limits.
