Hi Steve,

'kmupdate' basically replaces the need to move compiled kernels into place for the next reboot. It initiates the /sbin/init.d/kmbuild script for when the system boots.

Here is a link to where HPUX man pages can be viewed on-line.
http://www.docs.hp.com/hpux/os/11.0/index.html

Good luck with the exams....
Michael

Hi everyone

Just a quick question regarding kernel changes

In the manual we have

Change directory to /stand/build

cd /stand/build

Create the kernel param file from the running system

/usr/lbin/system_prep -s /stand/system

Make your changes to your new system file

vi /stand/build/system

Build the new kernel

/usr/lbin/mk_kernel -s ./system

backup the old system and kernel files

cp /stand/vmunix /stand/vmunix.prev
cp /stand/system /stand/system.prev

mv you new files into place

Yet in the exam practice the steps from the question are

20. You are currently in the /stand/build directory building a new static kernel for an HP-UX 11.00 system. You have completed all the tasks to build the kernel. Which tasks, in which order, must be performed to make the new kernel the running kernel and also preserve the old kernel?

kmupdate

mv /stand/system /stand/system.prev; mv system /stand/system

Step 1. shutdown -ry 0

Excuse me if I seem a little dim here as I have never built a server from scratch

What does kmupdate actually do ?

I am at home at the moment and have my exam tomorrow so can't check the man pages for kmupdate

Any help appreciated

Steve

Have a look at this manual:
http://docs.hp.com/hpux/onlinedocs/B2355-90681/B2355-90681.html

Go to the 'K' section (click on the + to expand it) and then click on kmupdate.
