OK we're close . hopefully I'm right. Check the file /etc/nsswitch.conf particularly the line that begins with "passwd:". What is the order of your password resolution/search ? It must (if you're not running NIS) start with "files" first for the tcb db to be read. It should look like this ..
passwd: file
If not change it and give it another try.
Trusted System Unknown id:

I am trying to set up a Trusted System on a K-470 running HP-UX 11i (new install). When I convert to Trusted using SAM I receive no errors. On another terminal which was logged in before changing to trusted (someone recommended that), I try to su to root or myself and get an error.

gmoore1@prolifik:/home/gmoore1> su -
Password:
su: Unknown id :root
gmoore1@prolifik:/home/gmoore1> su - gmoore1
Password:
su: Unknown id: gmoore1

Is the "Unknown id" message really mean "bad password?" I was using the old (untrusted) password and was expecting it to say the password was expired. But it seems to say that the user I am logged in as does not exist, except it does. Any idea what's going on?

I successfully un-trusted the system and could log in with the old password

Just had anothe thought. I tried to telnet to the system and got
HP-UX prolifik B.11.11 U 9000/889 (ta)

login: gmoore1
Password:
Login incorrect

Wait for login retry: ..
login: root
Password:
Login incorrect

so it is not just an "su" problem.

Thanks for your help.

Yeah!!!

The nsswitch.conf had passwd set to compat, which is what the old system had. Who knew!

And why did HP include some hints like that in the setup guide.

Thanks so much.
