Hi Everybody!!!!

I'm running HP-UX 10.20 on an HP9000 Box, and i'm trying to install Ignite UX
but i can't because the /opt file system doesn't have enough space.

/dev/vg00/lvol1 /
/dev/vg00/lvol3 /home
/dev/vg00/lvol4 /opt 86% full
/dev/vg00/lvol5 /tmp
/dev/vg00/lvol6 /usr
/dev/vg00/lvol7 /var

It has a 704 swap space area and the total disk space is 2 GB, is mirrored w/o
striping.
There's nothing i can remove but the VG has 178 PE Free (89 because of the
mirror).

My question is, are there special considerations for extending FS under the
root VG?
Can i treat them as any other FS?

Thanks!!!!

Hi Eduardo,

Extending /opt should not be a problem for you since you have free space in the
vg right now, and /opt is its own filesystem. Simply umount /opt and do an
lvextend to extend it to the new size and then run an extendfs on the raw lvol
device. You should be able to re-mount it then and bdf will reflect the new
amount of space.

You can even extend the logical volume while the file system is still mounted.
Once this is succesfull, unmount the file system, extendfs and mount it back.

Sometimes extending the filesystems in vg00 are difficult because they do not
like to umount and report "Device busy". If this occurs you can try the
following:
1) lvextend the lvol
2) umount returns "Device busy" error
3) fuser -cu /xxx ###relace xxx with opt, var, usr..
This will show you what is currently accessing the filesystem.
4) cd /
5) fuser -cuk /xxx ###again replace xxx
This will kill all processes using the /xxx filesystem.
6) umount /xxx
If it works, then use extendfs and remount and you're done. If still
unsucessful, then this filesystem will not unmount in multi-user mode. You will
then need to go to single-user mode to get the filesystem unmounted and
extended. This is typical with most vg00 filesytems.
