also rlogin to the box and run top ?

What are you doing or using when the hang occurs. Is the USB mouse attached directly into the work station ?

anything (errors) before you reboot in /var/dt/Xerrors or the syslog.log ?

At the next hang try <CTRL><SHIFT><BREAK> as soon as the mouse freezes, if that fails
rlogin/telnet to the box and kill dtlogin followed by X, if need be .... are any of the above processes core dumping ?

If yes run "file core", I'd check in /usr/dt/bin and /usr/bin/X11 but a global find :
find / -name | grep core maybe worthwhile.

lastly can you run the following command :

/usr/bin/graphinfo or
/opt/graphics/common/bin/graphinfo
and post the outputs
</BREAK></SHIFT></CTRL>

This may not be your problem, but I experienced the same symptoms on a C3000.

After loading patchset after patchset, and then reloading the OS, an HP Hardware tech said he fixed it before by changing the system board. That did the trick, mentioning that there production issues when the USB hub is connected to the system board.

Good Luck!

I see in the process list a user called ideas ... is this connected with SDRC_IDEAS CAD S/W at all and if so what CAD application are or are you likely to be running on the system ? Is this running at the time of the hang ? What versions

and have you tried http://www.hp.com/go/sdrc look at the technical information link and then General hp-ux tunning information ... the latest patches as per Steve's suggestion is also a good idea !

Ideas and UG both seem to have lots of problems in HP-UX.
Im not sure your version, but if it is version 9, then make sure your up to IR2. Also, make sure to install the most current versions of OpenGL, and complete patch sets from the March2002 release.

Unigraphics introduced QRM18.0.4.2 which is also causing the X server to hand until ugraf is killed. Since you used a PC to zip your top output I cant see if ugraf is running.
For UG, remove it and re-install up to version 18.0.2 until the Xserver hang is fixed.

As for sleeping processes, this is very normal. All this means is that 91 processes are waiting for something to happen before they go to work.
I.E. nfsd is always active (unless you disabled NFS server), but does not need to do anything until a client makes a request. Thus until such time occurs, it sleeps.

Regards,
Shannon

If this were me I'd reboot the box install the list of patches listed by steve on top of the the latest O/S media provided by HP and the Graphics and Technical computing bundle.

I'd also ensure the mouse and keyboard are correctly plugged into the back of the system .... I suspect your last error maybe a red herring but you just don't know ... if you have a spare USB mouse try it.

However if you have a support contract you maybe wise to get HP involved directly.
