Mike,

The BEST FREE SOftware that you can run is Linux on your PC. It is totally compatible, and significantly faster than NT.

With Linux, there are no additional software packages you need, everything is included.

Please feel free to contact me if you need further assistance.

I have a HP9000 D series machine running 10.20. We currently access this from PCs running Windows NT4 workstation using terminal emulation software (Smarterm).

I would like to try and setup X windows. My questions are :

1. What is the best (free !) X windows software for PCs
2. What do I need to install on unix

I'm a complete beginner as far as X windows is concerned so any additional advice or comments will be much appreciated.

Thank you all,

Mike
You should not need to do anything to your unix system as long as CDE is setup to run and loaded.

There are no free emulators I know of for NT but we at HP user Reflection X and I have not had the font and color problems other emulators have in the past

Emil Velez
most packages are very similar these days :Hummingbirds Exceed and WRQ's reflectionsX spring to mind but they are not free:(

As to what you need on the hp-ux side : simply use swinstall and install from the core O/S the CDE runtime bundle, everything else should follow suit, basically this product installs X + the cde window manager : processes which should now be running on server after install = dtlogin and started an run-level 3 from something like /etc/rc3.d/S990.dtlogin.

One gotcha you may find is that CDE uses a set of fonts called dt-interface, some PC packages have difficulty with these : check /var/dt/Xerrors (Xservers log file) if seen set up a font server on hp-ux (see man xfs) and point PC Xemulation S/Wares font path to use it.

Good luck !

HI,

Don't know about free but it seems that Exceed by Hummingbird is the most popular and respected emulator for Windows. Once you set it up, there are no porblems with it.

The software I have used is SuperX. I am unsure of the purchase price. There is a fully functional demo copy available at the following web site.
http://www.frontiertech.com/

Brian
<*(((>< er
Mike ,
You can get a evaluation copy of Reflection X ( two months evaluation period) from www.wrq.com and I feel it is among the best emulation softwares available especially in a multiplatform environment. You can either download it or get a copy on CD for free from your nearest dealer.
Using Linux is also a very good idea.
