Do I need setup anything on 2/20 Ultrium Library

Hi All,

I plan Connect the 2/20 Scsi Tape Library with rp7400. Do I need set any target on tape library or the Rp7400 can auto detect the Tape Library.

Leon,

I had HP engineer connect my 2/20 Ultrium SCSI tape library to an rp5450 (not much different from rp7400). I am pretty sure that the server can autodetect the tape library. After you connect the library and power it and the server up, you should see a device file /dev/rac/c?t?d? (it is associated with the robotic arm) and other two device files /dev/rmt/0m and /dev/rmt/1m (which are associated with the two tape drives. As for backup sw, I used OBII and recalled that I did have to specify the locations of the device files in order to configure them successfully even though OBII claimed that it could autodetect devices.

hello,

You can install it and the server will detect it properly, provided there is no SCSI ID conflicts. Once installed, check which backup software you are using and configure the tape driver accordingly. Different backup softwares using different drivers (Veritas, OB, Legato etc).

Hi Leon,

You may have to enable the "schgr" kernel driver if it is not enabled in the kernel and rebuild / reboot so that the picker / changer in the library can be sensed by the system.

The system will auto-detect the tape drives in the library. It will not auto-detect the robot/changer/. For that, see the documentation of your backup software (OmniBack?) or scsi_ctl(7) (if the driver for the tape drives is stape) or scsi_pt(7) (if the driver for the tape drives is tape2).

Just read in your tape library manual how to create the robotic device. After you connect the library to the RP machine, do ioscan -fn > /tmp/IOSCAN and 'more' the file. You should see the tape drives, if the tape drives show up as unknown devices, then go to SAM/Kernel config and add the tape (I think stape) drives and reboot. Then, you will have to configure the library in your backup software. If OmniBack, then follow the instructions, it's straight forward but make sure you assign the correct index number to each tape drive.
