Hardware Upgrade

I have an E55 Series 800, running HP-UX 10.20, used as an application server (Progress Databases) and also runs sendmail. But that's about it.

The busses are SCSI-1 so I don't get performance that I want out of newer disks and DLTs that I want to add to it.

So - time to upgrade. We'll be purchasing a refurb, it looks like.

The question is, do I go for a D,K, or what? The applications will not change.

Keep in mind that I have a slow single CPU now, and SCSI-1. Anything would be an improvement.

But I don't know the other boxes well enough to know the differences between them.

depending on your budget- I'd go for a L1000 the smallest of HPs midsize-servers: PA8500, 360/440MHz, 1-2 CPUs, 5PCI slots, comes with Ultra-SCSI2, 100bT.

L2000 (1-4CPU, 10PCI slots),
N4000 1-8 PA8[56]00, 360/440/550MHz, 12PCI slots

all HPUX 11.0/64bit

If you are going refurb, a D box should provide the power per your listing in the post. The D class (depending on which one you get) can be setup to run HPUX 11.00 in 64-bit mode. This would be for the higher end D's.

A K class would be a good choice as well.

If the money is in the budget, go with the L class.

Hi Fred,

Not sure where you are but HP recently had an exceptional deal going on L1000 and L2000's. A client has purchased one which I'm currently implementing. This is a 2 -way L2000 to replace a 3-way K210. Much smaller than the K210 with twice the grunt, supports all the latest UltraScsi etc. D class may also be suitable, it really comes down to your budget. I'd suggest the K-class is on it's way out, 'tho maybe not the higher end systems.

Related to this issue, I realize now that I have no idea what the CPU speed is on my existing E55 box. How do I find that out? ioscan doesn't do it, and nothing in dmesg.

Hmmmmm. This is why they pay salesmen comissions....... Pick 3 of your favorite 3rd party refurbishers. Abtech, BlueLine, Norco, to pick three nowhere near at random , give them your specs, let them beat themselves over the head to give you a good price and more importantly an education as to why their solution is the best one. Then invite you HP rep in and invite him to educate you as to why genuine, brand new HP equipment is your only choice. Based on your budget and what your bull**** detector tells you (turn it to HIGH when you talk to HP) make your choice and pay your money.
