A patch PHSS_26411 1.0 was installed in connection with Support Tool Manager.

This patch introduced a problem in 'stm' regarding the handling of the root password.

The first two letters of the password in the
file /etc/passwd file correspond to the cipher key used to encrypt the password.

In our case these letters were 'xg'. With
this configured root password we were not able to start 'cstm' and execute the map command.

The output was always 'NO CURRENT SYSTEM':

# cstm
Running Command File (/usr/sbin/stm/ui/config/.stmrc).
-- Error --
Hostname (nclass) could not be connected due to an invalid user login name or password.
Please Refer to the UI Activity Log for more details.

-- Information --
Support Tools Manager
Version A.30.05
Product Number B4708AA
(C) Copyright Hewlett Packard Co. 1995-2001
All Rights Reserved
Use of this program is subject to the licensing restrictions described
in Help-->On Version . HP shall not be liable for any damages resulting
from misuse or unauthorized use of this program.

-- Information --
Aborting all open command files.
cstm>map
* * * N O C U R R E N T S Y S T E M * * *
------

Somehow it is not possible for 'stm' to connect to the application with this
password.

If the leading 'x' is not present in other generated root passwords, there is no problem with executing 'cstm'.

Anyone here has faced with this problem.
Any work around ?

Try updating your Online Diagnostics version, which will in turn update STM. I was having this problem and upgraded my whole Online Diagnostics product bundle which moved STM from version 11.11.10 to 11.11.11.

This is even better if you do not need to apply any kernel patches since the bundle installation itself does not require a reboot.
