Can someone please give me a breif explanation on the differences between the two. Why would I purchase one or the other?

Thanks
Tony

Hi Tony,

There are some differences in the way that certain system calls are different and the file system layout used to be different on the two. Also the way that certain system calls acted was a minor difference eg. locking.

You can not decide one over the other as the best platform and most modern Unix's carry a bit of both "versions"

Tony:

Here's an interesting "one-page" summary of BSD vs. SYSV. As it correctly notes, HP-UX takes from both lineages.

http://www.cgd.ucar.edu/gds/thibaud/UNIX-tips/Tips/sysv-bsd.html

As to why purchase one or the other; I would submit that's somewhat a personal choice.

...JRF...
