Stupid Newbie Question

I just re-installed HP-UX B.11.23 on a test server and I did not set the root password. What is the default root password?

There isn't one.

If you did not specify the password as part of the install, then there will not be one set.

O.K. Than I must have screwed something up because I tried to just use root and no password and it says Login incorrect. I guess I just need to re-install again. No big deal.

before/after the installation (depends on method) the system will ask you for the password and you have to set one.

e.g.

This section enables you to set the "root" password for the system.

The "root" account is used for system administration tasks. To insure
the security of the system, the root account should have a password.
_______________________________________________________________________________

Do you want to set the root password at this time?

Press [y] for yes or [n] for no, then press [Enter] y
New password:

Hi,
if you did not set at the installation time then there is' t default password.
If the system ask for password that you not know you can change it rebotting in Single User mode.

If you forgot the passwd, just go to single user mode and set a new one.

What did you install from? DVD? Ignite tape?

If it was from a make_tape_recovery or make_net_recovery, then the password will be whatever it was when the recovery image was created.

If you boot the machine into single-user mode, mount /usr and /var, you can then edit the /etc/passwd file or the /tcb/files/auth/r/root file to eliminate the password and reset it to whatever you want.

I installed from DVD. It's no big deal, but I did learn a couple of things about how to reset the root password and what the password would be if restoring from Ignite.

As usual I have learned from this forum.
