Hello,

Is is possible/desireable to have a primary DNS server on HPUX10.20 and the secondary on HPUX11.00

We are planning a similar configuration on HP-UX 11i and Windows 2000 server.

Normally there should not be any problems.

Hi Hilary..

Our Primary DNS is running on a 10.2 while 1 slave is 11 and another is 10.2. I have encounter no problems at all. We use bind 8.

At least DNS is DNS, you always get the result if it is available and setup correctly from any DNS server.

I have DNS servers on 10.20, 11.00, and Windows.

Desireable is having both a primary and secondary, but be advised that the timeouts on a 10.20 client machine are an ugly thing and range around 40 seconds before it will try the secondary.

Yes this is possible, and could even be desirable.

You can have your secondary on any platform you want, including non HP/UX systems such as Solaris, linux, win2k, Novell, etc.

Also if possible you should have at least one secondary on a different subnet, and if your organization is large enough, even in a different physical location.

Once you are reliant on DNS for your systems, you want to have as redundant a system as possible, and you don't want on router failing to cut off access to all of your dns servers.
