I am trying to create a bootable tape for an HP-UX 11.11:

Hi,

why don't you simply use "make_tape_recovery" to create bootable recovery image?

I am afraid your syntax is wrong from ISL.

Try to boot tape from BDC's "bo " command.

E.g BDC>bo 0/1/1/1.2.0

Hi Jozef,

Execute search ipl in the PDC> MAIN MENU, this will scan for the devices which has IPL ( bootable).

In this case if the Tape is bootable the device should get listed as

sequencial access device IPL....

Just to clarify, the tape drive will be listed as a bootable device regardless of whether it can boot from the tape or not. The previously suggested syntax (bo ) is correct.

Hi,

Infact the bootable Tape does not use "vmunix" kernel, during boot.

It uses a INSTALL kernel, to be more precise - IINSTALL incase of Itanium server and WINSTALL incase of PARISC server.

So DONT interace with ISL during boot and let boot process continue...
( select "n" for interact with IPL" )

It should load

:tape(x/x/x.x.x;0):INSTALL

and continue.

You would get the User Interface after this boot process.

The tape may be bootable, but doesn't look like there is a vmunix kernel on it.

It seems simple enough to test.
1. put tape in.
2. run sea
3. run bo # where # is the number for the sequential device...the tape.
4. Do NOT use IPL.
5. Wait.
You need to wait for the bootable image to load from the tape. For my Vclass machines, that 30 to 40 minutes. My only concern would be with the type of ignite tape. Some older versions just blow up your boot disk. Most now-a-days bring up a menu. If that's the case: wait and watch.
6. Then an ignite menu pops up.

Note I didn't say "vmunix" in any of this.
