      <description>Can anybody explain how the load factor displayed in top command o/p is calculated, also the values &lt;BR /&gt;of Memory (real,virtual,free) are different from&lt;BR /&gt;their actual values ( as I thouoght) can anybody elaborate on the meaning of real,virtual and free.       <description>THe load is based on the average number of jobs in the run queue over 5, 10 and 15 minutes.  My favourite metric actually.  It doesn't tell me anything apart from the fact that there is a problem.&lt;BR /&gt; &lt;BR /&gt;Theoretically real is physical RAM available to applications which isn't the same as real physical ram.  Virtual RAM is your real RAM plus any swap  you might have though I have a feeling that for top, virtual and swap are equivalent.  And free RAM is how much you have left to fill up with more apache web servers.</description>
