INIT: Command is respawning too rapidly

Help!
Gentlemen & Lady Admins:

My unix administrator rebooted our webserver because a user was complaining about "child processes" not being able to run. DOn't know the details of that - he isn't here. However, in any case - this is my problem. After the reboot we get the following errors:

/sbin/rc[61]: syntax error at line 36: '`` unmatched

INIT: Command is respawning too rapidly.
Will try again in 5 minutes.
Check for possible errors.
id: cons "/usr/sbin/getty console console"

We get more similar errors with /usr/vue/bin/vuerc and spserver.

After the errors, our system just hangs. The only way to get to a prompt is to go into single user. We are at our wits end. Please, someone help!

One other thing - we did re-ip our network last month and made all the necessary changes and this machine was working fine. At first I suspected that we missed a networking related file; however, I have triple checked this wih no success pls help.

I have checked that rc script and no one has changed it. I don't see why it would have a syntax error.

Michael:

Look in the /etc/rc.conf.d/ directory for files that have been recently modified. I think you will find the culprit there.

Filenames containing [.,~#] are not sourced by /etc/rc.config.d (as sourced by /sbin/rc) so you can ignore those.

Thanks for the help. However, I have already tried those things suggested. I have a feeling that I am going to have to rebuild the box. I am at my wits end. I have moved our web server to another machine so that we can be back in business but this is REAAAAAALLLY bothering me because I am not the admin type who likes to rebuild machines when I Just KNOW there is an answer (and a simple one at that) out there. Mike,

Did you check your /sbin/rc for any problem as the error says.May be something might have been modified in /sbin/rc, I checked for line 36 in our systems rc file it points to a blank line.Also I would think about the console.Is the console working properly.
