Roger:

Some, but not all, K-class systems support 64-bit 11.X.

K-class (PA7x00) only support 32-bit.
K-class (PA8x00) support either 32- or 64-bit.

You can look at /usr/sam/lib/mo/sched.models on your current machine for which processor type your model represents.

Make sure you have the required minimum PDC revision and minimum firmware revision installed for your processor.

If you have the Diagnostic Support Tools loaded, you can obtain the values by doing the following:

# ioscan -fn -C processor
# echo "sel path 32;info;wait;infolog"|cstm > /tmp/infolog

The above assumes that the hardware path of the processor in question was "32" as returned by ioscan.

Match the PDC and firmware values to the table found in chapter-2 of "Installing HP-UX 11.0 and Updating HP-UX 10.x to 11.0":

http://docs.hp.com/hpux/onlinedocs/B2355-90679/B2355-90679.html

...JRF...

I am pplanning a migration of several of my K systems from 10.20 to 11.0 and implementing the 64bit flavor. But, I'm hearing rumors that 64bit version will not execute in the K systems.

Can anybody shead some light on this issue.

That rumor is untrue. The K series will support both 32 and 64 bit 11.0.

Here is the appropriate portion of the /etc/.supported_bits file on my 11.0 machine:

9000/802/K250 32/64
9000/879/K260 32/64
9000/879/K260-EG 32/64
9000/889/K460-EG 32/64
9000/889/K460-XP 32/64
9000/898/K370 32/64
9000/804/K450 32/64
9000/889/K460 32/64
9000/899/K570 32/64
9000/893/T600 32/64
9000/893 32/64
9000/800/V2200 64
9000/800/V2000 64
9000/800/V2250 64
9000/800/K380 32/64
9000/800/K580 32/64
Hi !

I think all PA8xxx support HP-UX 11 with 64 bit, but may be need firmware upgrade...

regards, Saa

One more thing to consider: if you do not have > 4GB of RAM then you actually will a small performance hit by going to a 64-bit OS. At 4GB or less, unless you have shared memory needs which cannot be met by SHMEM-MAGIC, you are better off running the 32-bit OS.
