This time time I am not going to ask what your Salary is .. :-)) ... But, tell me what do you think is a decent salary for the Unix Admins in the market depending on the years of experience they have.

Karthik,

It's too dependant on where you live. There's no way to compare. Minimal, entry level salaries here in the US would be much higher than an experienced person might make where you are.

I think generally if you get 1k for each year of your age then you should be happy.

A lot of it is not just down to experience but also location that affects the wage but thats the rule of thumb that i use.

I think it comes down to 3 aspects,....

1. The experience of the person (in years and variety of products)
2. The technical nature of the role which they are undertaking (Basic Admin, or Advanced Troubleshooting or Architecture Design)
3. The economic climate of the time, including the scarcity of the skillset.

Ian is right the scarcity of the skillset is a big issue.

At first a CCNA/CCNP or a MCSE could command a realy good wage initially but the the market became flooded with people with the same skill sets and it drove the wages right down.

Tis the old supply and demand chestnut!

Hey ... I was just checking my forums profile ... :-) ...

Today I have completed 1 year as HP ITRC Forum Member ... Isn't that great ... and also on this day I have been promoted to Graduate ... Down the memory lane 6 years back on this very date I started off my carrer after completion of my studies .... :-))

as for the salary...
location, cost of living (in that area), general trend in the market, companies financial status, demand for the skill, level of skill required, possibly age, actual job function, all take part in determining salary... oh yeah... personality.... personality goes a long way (pulp fiction)

I have 14 years in IT now (10 with HP-UX).

35K - 55K Junior Unix Admin
45K - 70K Intermediate Unix Admin
70K - 100K Senior Unix Admin

35 to 55 = 24,868 to 39,076
45 to 70 = 31,969 to 49,729
70 to 100 = 49,979 to 71,042

Based on today's converions rates.

I agree with previous statement:

35K - 55K Junior Unix Admin
45K - 70K Intermediate Unix Admin
70K - 100K Senior Unix Admin

But I think that that applies to US $.

It depends, also, as stated, on a bunch of factors:
geographical: New York City pays more than Iowa.
industry: Financial pays more than university. Merrill Lynch pays more than the university of cincinnati.
employer: PricewaterhouseCoopers Consulting pays more than university of Cincinatti.
Size: Large corporations with 100 servers pay more than small companies with 5 servers.

Also, you can increase your income by being a contractor rather than a company employee. But you sacrifice security in hard times (like now). (Security is a whole other subject - the reality or illusion thereof.)

A further factor to consider is specialization: It used to be that the UNIX System Admin did all jobs pertaining to administration of a system. Now there are specialists:
Performance Management Specialists.
Storage Administrators.
SAN Administrators.
Backup Administrators.

They often pay more.

Also, check ads on NetTemps and Monstor. They often have prices in them (although recruiters lie to you sometimes.)
