I looking for several X-emulators to use within our production-environment. Several users need to connect to our production-servers with a pc and use a small graphical application on our HP-UX server. They use X-vision at the moment. We are looking for a better and (above all) cheaper alternatives. Does anyone have a suggestion?

We use Hummingbird Exceed - and find it excellent. Much better than Reflections we used to use. I see Exceed v8 only costs US$160 on amazon.com, and on ebay.com its less than $100, and older version (were using v7) are even cheaper!
Andre-

The two more dominant X-emulation software applications are Exceed and Reflection X..

I believe that Reflection is the more inexpensive, but don't quote me on that..

I've found that the easiest one to use would be Reflection, as its Wizards are more easily accessible, allowing you to create client files for access to different machines, etc..

Mike-

Don't know the price(s), but your commercial options can include:

- HCL eXceed
- KEA
- XonNET

As mentioned earlier, Cygwin is your *free* choice...

Another option is.. why not run Linux instead on their desktops (or run Vmware so they can run both Windows and Linux)

;^)

You might be able to use VNC which is free software. It also runs on HPUX as well as Windows. There are many varients of this tool available.
http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/
You can tunnel this through SSH as well.
As for price between Exceed and Reflections, I find it amazing people dont shop competatively.

Get a quote on Exceed. Call WRQ software (makers of Reflections). They will match or beat the quote.

You shop this way for a car, truck, house, motorcycle, etc... Why is software any different?

Regards,
Shannon

ps. I agree, cygwin and vnc are free, and work very well. Just have to make up your own support methods is all.

Another alternative might be Xvnc.

You could run a VNC server on the HP-UX server and then connect to it with thin-clients on the PC. One benefit would be that if uptime on the HP-UX is greater than PC, the app would keep running. Another would be that multiple people could view the same app. PCs could disconnect at will and the app would continue running. Network throughput would be decreased because RFB protocol is lighter-weight than X protocol.

And it should fit your budget - free...

http://realvnc.com/

Hi,

we are looking for an economical X-Emulator with SSH. We have disabled telnet and ftp and want to tunnel X11 traffic thru ssh.

Any ideas out there. Reflection is very expensive approx $ 700 per user with ssh.

Thanks in advance,

Patrick
