Oracle is a multi-platformed database that essentially runs the same code re-compiled and linked on all the various platforms.

There is no way to run an oracle database without a hostname.

Setting a hostname on a local pc is not a big deal though.

All you need to do is go through the install process and answer the questions. You will be left with a working oracle database that you can learn skills on.

Thats a good thing, because a lot of the skills you pick up on the PC side will be readily appliciable when you take your oracle skills to the big leagues, aka Sun, HP-UX and Linux.

SEP

Hi there,

I want to use Oracle locally on my PC, just to create very, very simple databases via SQL*PLUS, without having to provide a host name and username and password?

Is this possible? If so could someone tell me how??

Thanx

hi,
-
You can install Oracle Personal Edition and setup the environment so that you can issue command like:
.
sqlplus /
.
to connect to the database.
-
If you need any further assistance, please let us know.
-
regards
Yogeeraj
