My monthly attempt to summarize familiar, repeating issues

1) Recover the content lost during the 9/20/03 conversion/update - there are
numerous threads which suffered partial content loss, Merijn's statistics
postings being a prime example. Other examples point out that the benefit of
the ITRC database as a resource has been severely compromised. An excellent
dialog on wiping disks via various commands has now been rendered non-sensical
because much of it has been lost.

*Has something been done to fix this? I searched out the disk-wiping thread

*and discovered that it seems to read OK now. By the same token, checking a
*couple of my old congratulatory posts shows that parts are still missing???

2) When a thread is closed:
...a. No points - no bunny
...b. (my personal opinion) Is the close facility really necessary?

3) Create a new category under HP-UX for congratulations, humor and other
miscellaneous off-topic threads so that those who don't wish to view these
items can bypass them.

4) Repeat the bread crumb navigation links at the bottom of the page so we
don't have to page all the way up to the top of long threads. Also, add the
same links to the notification pages.

5) Could we possibly have a real, functional search engine? Please??

6) I thought this was supposed to be fixed but I don't see it!
Allow for formatted text that does not lose spaces, so script snippets can
be understood.

7) Provide the ability for a user to customize the forum subjects they view by
setting up their own groupings (like: all of HP-UX, plus Servers (9000), plus
Workstations (hp-ux based), plus all of Storage - well, you get the idea).

8) From Merijn: The ability to have a fixed signature in one's profile.

9) Is it possible to fix it so the "javascript.open" function works the
same in different browsers - in Netscape, firefox, Opera, etc., the link
opens in the same window.

10) Now that the new headgear situation has been addressed, I think it's
time to start asking for it to be addressed again. There is really only
room for two stars underneath the wreath. What are you going to do once
Clay hits 80,000 points? How about a wreath of stars? You could probably
fit 5 or six nice gold stars in a wreath and set the value of each succeeding
star high enough that you should be able to have the system ready for "y1m"
(that's 1,000,000, I think). You could award one star at a time or put the
outline in place and color the stars in as they are earned.

While I'm here let me back up the signature issue. Do you know how many times I've mistyped SEP?

I actually agree with most of what Pete says, though it seems futile to ask for old content to be fixed.

Could HP possibily just say "we can't fix it, sorry" and maybe we can knock off an issue.

My add in: When threads are deleted for housekeeping, not TOS violations, the user should not get the nasty "bad little boy/girl" message.

I do not want to stomp on any toes, but everyone of these things in the list are either on the enhancement list already or being looked into. We've exchanged this information with Pete. I was hoping the list posted in this months thread would have been smaller but am ok to still see the entire list here regardless.

The ITRC Forums management team takes your feedback seriously that is the purpose of the Monthly Issues thread. Not every message will be replied to on a one by one basis, however the feedback is submitted or the issues are taken care of.

I'd like to thank Pete again because so many of the enhancements that are currently incorporated or under consideration are a direct result of his feedback. It makes me chuckle when I look at the change-request spreadsheet, because I can clearly match it to what Pete has submitted verbatim even though Pete's name isn't on the sheet itself.

I'd also like to thank the numerous moderators who are always lurking and who are always taking care to keep things running smoothly. They don't get points for helping but all deserve a big penny-bank full of points.

True, this information has been shared with me - along with a caution to keep it to myself.

I thought about revising my list based on what had been communicated to me but then thought that I would be unable to explain why things had been altered or removed without giving away my "inside information".

I kind of feel caught in the middle here!

Is there some way we can get a monthly summary from someone at HP as to what issues are currently being worked on, their status, expected release date, etc?

We send all this feedback, but never really hear a whole lot from it, especially concerning new features and the items in Pete's monthly list.

Over the last few days a lot of multiple choice questions have been posted. This appears to be people asking the forum members for help with studying for exams.

Is this an appropriate use of the forum?

And the number of "point hunters" who copy a good answer from above seems to have increased as well. I know this is to the individual's conscience, but it's still irritating. When I see a question I know the answer to, I read the answers that have already been given. If someone's already given the answer I would give I don't bother to repeat it.

In the August thread I pointed to the same issue about "point hunters". Actually there is nothing can be done, but I hope that ppl that do it, will read this message and reconsider their ways of answering the questions.

Regarding point hunters, if the people asking the questions didn't award points for repeat answers then it should die out. Of course, the people asking tend to be the less experienced posters, so educating them may be difficult. Is there any scope for clarifying the instructions regarding point assignment in this regard?

The instructions at present seem clear to me, but perhaps adding something explicit about not rewarding repeated information would help:
Use the following scale when rating a response:

N/A: The reply was a clarification to my original question
1-3: The answer didn't help answer my question, but thanks anyhow!
4-7: The answer helped with a portion of my question, but I still need help.
8-10: The answer has solved my problem completely! I'm a happy camper!

I'm not sure I'm guilty of point hunting, but I sometimes add a reply that summarises previous points and confirms them, when the topic is something I'm certain I know the answer to (and when the other posters may just be speculating).

Another enhancement request, although I am not sure if this one is already on the elusive list of already logged requests:

Can we have a chance to edit the posting for a few minutes/hours (whatever is suitable) after we made the post. Some typographical errors or lack of punctuation in the correct places, stick out like thorn on the rose stem. I know, by letting people edit their posts forever, is open to abuse but in my opinion, it does not hurt to let them modify it for the next 30-60 minutes after the post has been made. Even maybe delete the post themselves if it is in an incorrect forum or inappropriate sub-section.
