    <description>Hi,&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;There is no reliable way to check remaining space an a media if hardware compression is used (which is default). As as compression ratio is data dependant, there can be big differences from one time to another. The only (reliable( way is to run the drive in native mode (and subtract the data, written to the tape from the native media capacity). But, in that case you will loose an average of half the media capacity and, also much of the drive speed.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;LTO drives should not be cleaned unless the drive request for cleaning. Most backup softwares can be condigured for automatic cleaning. The cleaning interval for such drives is very long and you will see little use of the cleaning media.</description>

      <description>Unless you know what is on tape, in what format, you can not tell what is free space on it.??&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;What drive do you use?? What backup software??</description>

      <description>Sorry for incomplete details.&lt;BR /&gt;We are taking backup of Unix (HP-UX 11.x) file system on LTO. Only single tape of 250Gb is alloted for my server. So before start the backup i want to know how much space is free available on the Tape.&lt;BR /&gt; I'm taking backup using SAVE command.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;Thanks&lt;BR /&gt;</description>
