We use NIS to automount home directories, and every once in a while, the mounts get hung. problem is, I CANNOT umount manually the /home/user dir, and remount. When I do try umount, umount comes back with a " Block device required" error. It seems the only way to fix this is to reboot, which is not an option in the middle of the day! Is there a way to manually FORCE this to be unmounted? Any help would greatly appreciated...

Thanks Paul...

The files seem to be fine.

It's running 11.11 with an older patch bundle...i'll patch it up...see what happens..

It looks like there is no way but a reboot to fix however...

Dan
Can you post what you have as values in the following files please?

/etc/resolv.conf
/etc/nsswitch.conf
/etc/rc.config.d/nfs.conf
/etc/auto.home (auto_home -whatever you called it)
and the contents of your other automounted file systems from the nis server.

also - have you done a fuser on the filesystem that you cannot unmount?

Have you modified any values in your nfsconf file, etc.

Without that info - here is my guess - other than patches -
you need to bump the values in nfsconf of num_nfsd and num_nfsiod -
(multiply them by 4) - that should be a good start.

Also, make sure the clients can resolve the host name of the nis server to the inteface for the subnet they are on (assuming multi nic server)
Monica,

thanks for the reply. I attached the nsswitch, auto_master, and nfsconf. the resolv.conf file is fine. we have no problem resolving anything...
