HI
Are you using ssh or telnet to connect to this machine.
Earlier I had also faced similar problem when I had used openssh (3.0) on machine, causing intermittant corruption of wtmp file, I had downloaded ssh binaries and compiled on system to overcome this problem.

Thanks.
Prashant.

I administer about 20 HP-UX workstations. On one particular workstation, I keep getting an error when I try to telnet into it, saying something about /etc/utmp file. If I go in on another workstation, and ssh into the machine, I can get in fine. If I go to the workstation, and try to log in, I can get in fine.

Anyone have any ideas about what would be causing this, and a fix for it?

Thanks,
Russ

I have been just deleting the file, and recreating it, and it'll let me in. I haven't been doing the 'init q' part of it though. I've done what the attachment says, and we'll see. It usually happens every couple days. But yes, that is the same error as I'm getting.
