A comment from a 'Pawn on the chessboard'

Hello all-

Speaking for myself:

I've kinda read over the threads that I have seen where the issue of assigning points has been debated. And as I have seen many points of view, and not to indicate any new point of view, just remember:

The heads side of the coin-
Those who ask questions should realize what they came here for.. to receive help, to receive insight to a problem that they needed some answers to.. I for one ACKNOWLEDGE that my rear has been saved a lot of aggravation many times, and for those who contributed help to my questions, in whatever form, I assigned points based on the validity of the contributed info..

The tails side of the coin-
Those who answer questions should always know that they represent the majority of individuals that we are to grateful for the help, especially when they come from those who sit in the upper echelons, with having amassed a great number of points for their contributions (sidebar: I have always asked myself, where do they get the time)..

With that said, I think that we all should just remember to conduct ourselves with such a high level of integrity that the miniscule number of individuals that don't take the time out to assign points will just wither away, and the forums will still stand here, awaiting those lost souls..

I would like to be able to give 10 points without getting the magic bunny.

Usually there are more ways then one to get the solution in Unix. If someone send me a working solution I know there are other solutions out there which can achieve the same. But the bunny's usually stop the Unix-gods out there from replying futher.

But I do appriciate all the time and trouble spend on my questions. The answers I get here are usally better and certainly faster then the HP customer care centers.

Thats what all the complaining is about - the majority of people dont assign points, not the other way around.

Well said,

I might seem that there is a lot of bitching going on about points, but it is in fact little.

We (the participants) are trying to improve the quality of the search in that some post do not have points allocated to them and so someone searching coming across these post will not know the best/most appropriate answers to the problem. This in turn degrades the search.

I understand... I was just trying to give a different view coming from an individual that does come to the forum to ask for help, and try to give help every now and then..

I'm quite happy when I can solve anyone's problem. I'm almost never stopped by a bunny. What triggers me to visit a link is the "Subject". I'm only put off by threads with 40+ answers and *no* bunny

I've - as most of you know by now - put up a website for ITRC members only, where people can fetch the things they ask for so often. With 25 downloads a week, it proves to be useful, and obviously serves a purpose. If I would have received points for every download, I would have needed sandals by now. I don't care. Just get it and be happy. It'll save me a lot of time to answer all questions individually.

I think it must be mentioned that the Assign points function does not work very well, I've just had to assign points multiple times before they were applied - and the acknowledgement message WAS shown.

I agree as well on this !!!

But for one day we have said/done (ping/levitate etc.) enough !

Today we have been replying mainly on this sort of issue, lets have weekend and a beer.
To bad we live so far apart from each other else I would have invited you all...:)

Hi Mike,

your 'subject' is growing quite fast - like the other ones.
I'm just reading the forums since 2 weeks and there are very much interesting 'subjects'.
But it took awhile till I saw this diskussions about the points. It should be an own forum for topics like this.
As a new user it was not quiet clear how it works to assign points - and maybe the function really doesn't work correctly (as Bill says).
Neverthelesss I think it is really useful.

2 things that I have asked for, and 1 was brought up here.. perhaps we need to all hammer Dan? ;) as this is the most important.

1. Magic answer FLAG instead of point assignment.

Sorry, but someone pointing a link to a thread may solve the problem, but deserves less points that someone taking the time to explain. (Even if it's the 9999999th time it was explained).

2. The ability to "CLOSE" threads.

Point mongers are on questions with 10 point answers like stink on crap... anything for a point...
Some people (me included) dont assign points when they keep answering (I give a 1/2 hour window from 10pt answers), but then the point police have excuses to point fingers.

But anyway, it's fun to help all I can when Im here.

Never have I felt so much warmth and love from my peers (sniff, sniff!!)

So lemme see, I've had the breakfast from my co-workers (you'd think the app managers that have called me late Sunday night or had me work on holidays and during shutdowns would have been around to wish me well )..

I almost feel like a Rook, wait, a Bishop, no not that, maybe an ITRC Pharoah (wishful thinking..) instead of a pawn...he he he..

Getting ready to go for that beer, they'd better not let me recreate that stripe set on the QA box today...
