I have created a normal user account which does have FTP access however I have been told it is not actually an FTP account. So I just wanted to know how to rectify this.

Also someone else has asked me to provide them with a list of ftp users on the system so I need to know how to identify which users are ftp users.

Ps thanks for your help so far everybody.

There is no such thing as "looking at /etc/passwd and decide ftp users.)

If you want certain users not to be able to do ftp, then you can put them in /etc/ftpusers or in /etc/ftpd/ftpusers file.

Anil

Using the ftpusers file will allow you to control who has the ftp capabilities.

By default you cannot look into the passwd file and determine ftp accounts. You can setup these accounts to have specific characteristics so when you look you would know. But this is a management task on your part. You create the accounts and provide the characteristics.

So when I create a normal user account, is this an FTP account? I know users with normal accounts can FTP but I have been led to believe that "FTP accounts" are different.

And does this mean any accounts in /etc/ftpuser or /etc/ftpdusers are prohibited from using ftp?

ftp utilization and any users' rights to where they can ftp to and ftp from can be restricted by ftpusers file but as it has been said before me, there is no single cookie cutter recipe for how to do this and that. Every server and every set of users have different needs. WU ftp, which comes with hpux is highly configurable but, as with anything highly configurable software, this one too, is very open to shooting yourself at the foot. If you do not know what you are doing, which I presume is the case, I would seek some help from someone who did this before if you are required to configure an ftp-user heavy server. Trial and error is the worst thing you can do.

Do not think that there is a default difference between FTP accounts and normal users accounts.

You can create FTP accounts, configure them so they can only FTP (no terminal login allowed), and be distinct enough so that you can differentiate between the differences.

You can create the FTP only accounts and you can create the different characteristics.
It is up to you to manage and distinguish these different account types
