I just heard from another admin that the csh shell is being obsoleted in HPUX? Is this true? If so, what are the details and timing....

Thanks
Glenn

Hi

I have not heard anything about this, but perhaps csh will be substituted by tcsh which is a "superset" of csh (and perhaps with a link to csh). As there are many people who use csh and many script written for it I don't think csh will "disapper".

"perhaps csh will be substituted by tcsh
..."

That would be a lot more rational than dropping
csh. I haven't heard of any plans to obsolete csh. It seems far from dead, based on a quick
scan of /etc/passwd on a major timesharing
system here.

/usr/share/doc/11iV1_5RelNotes.txt ("HP-UX
11.20") says the following about tcsh
(and bash, among others), but nothing about
any plans to obsolete csh:

2.4.2 Details of Change

The TechSysConf bundle is being introduced in HP-UX 11i version 1.6
(B.11.22) as an always-installed part of the Minimal Technical Operating
Environment (MTOE). This bundle delivers part of the functionality that was
featured in Easy Setup HP-UX 11.00, product B5532A for HP Workstations. This
enhancement is in response to user requirements for improved Out-of-the-Box
performance. The MTOE and, by extension, the Technical Computing Operating
Environment (TCOE) will include this bundle, and the enhancements address
the needs of HP Workstation and Technical Server users.

The TechSysConf bundle consists of two component products:

...

* TC-OpenSource

Delivers a set of high-demand Open Source software tools:

o tcsh 6.10.2001-06-12, tcsh (a superset of C-shell)

o bash 2.04.2001-06-12, The Bourne-Again Shell

o vim 5.7.2001-06-12, Vi Improved

o emacs 20.7.2001-06-12, GNU Emacs

o gmake 3.79.1.2001-06-12, GNU make

o less 358.2001-06-12, GNU less

o xcdroast

o cdrecord

Hi

Sorry, I dont expressed my clear. What I would say was that I don't could think csh should disapper as it still have many users. But if it is something behind what Glenn writes it could be a "improved" csh compatible with the old. This has happends before (for example with awk).

But I have NOT heard anything about this more then what is written in this thread.
