Migrating from 11.00 to 11.11

We run a 2 N-class machines in a Mc/Serviceguard cluster , with some Oracle
database and WebSphere application server.
uname -a:
HP-UX orasrv1 B.11.00 U 9000/800 654359382 unlimited-user license

What is the best approach for upgrade or
migration with least disruption to running
applications and Oracle?

Where can I find cookbook type of
documentation or white paper.

See swlist attached for installed products.
In particular do I need to upgrade Mc/Serviguard first or is it transparent ?

Hi Frank

I always found it better to do a fresh 11i install. Follow these steps (assuming that Oracle and database/s are in their own VGs) - this list is NOT exhaustive (!) and I can't comment on WebSphere, although I assume you can re-install with ServiceGuard:

- Take a backup first!!
- Un-trust the system (if applicable)
- Backup the following files/directories:
/etc/cmcluster
/etc/oratab /etc/motd /sbin/init.d /usr/local/bin
/etc/rc.config.d /var/spool/cron/crontabs /etc/passwd /etc/group
/etc/hosts /etc/profile /etc/fstab /etc/inetd.conf /etc/ftpusers
/etc/networks /etc/pfs_fstab /etc/resolv.conf /etc/nsswitch.conf
/etc/services /etc/exports /var/adm/cron/cron.allow /var/adm/inetd.sec

- Get a print out of 'vgdisplay -v' & 'ioscan -fnC disk' and lssf all device files for each VG, just in case the device files change after the install and you then have a record of which hardware paths exist for each VG.
- Export all volume groups with vgexport options -s -p -m -f -v (see man page).

- Install the OS (to a spare disk if possible).
- Install SG/WebSphere (same version) for 11i.
- Restore and/or merge the files you backed-up earlier.
- Re-import the VGs (use the correct options for ServiceGuard cluster VGs).
- If the device-files have changed, you may need to alter the cluster lock device in the SG configuration. Hopefully they will stay the same.
- Re-trust the system (if applicable).
- SG should be operational without further intervention.

Hope this helps as a starting point, it is only intended as a general procedure and works for me, your set-up may be different - Keith

The least disruptive approach:

(1) purchase two more N-class servers or two new rp7410's
(2) install 11.23
(3) Install Oracle, SG, ...
(4) set up servers
(5) shutdown production processes
(6) copy data from old servers to new servers
(7) bring up new cluster

OR

(1) fail a server
(2) take failed server and BUILD it from scratch (cold/virgin install OS) (I would suggest 11.23)
(3) set up oracle and SG
(4) fail remaining production server
(5) bring up the NEW server as production
(6) rebuild recently failed server

One thing I am not clear about.
I would have to re-install software like
Omniback-agents and tools like lsof, Java SDK, sudo etc.. otherwise it would not show up on the swlist, right ?

Yep - that's right. With my procedure, you are COMPLETELY scrubbing the OS and layered products. All would need installing from scratch.

Yes, that's true, Frank. All your applications would have to be re-installed with new versions to match the Operating System version.

If you follow the very good cold install advice you have been given, all add in software and application software will have to be reinstalled.

If you choose to risk upgrade after taking a few make_tape_recovery backups, there are different rules for different products. HP probably made it so Omniback/DP will work after the upgrade, if you are on a suported version. If not, count on reinstallation, and the existing software severely inhibiting the chances of a successful upgrade with upgrade-ux.

I would have ServiceGuard on the latest supported release prior to doing any upgrade. Alternatively, just have the latest version on hand after a cold install along with codewords.

I can't express in words how much less frustrating a cold install would be.

seem you're all playing similar tunes,
so it should make sense :)

One more question:
Can I consider versions 11.11 or 11.23
all part of the 11i suite ?

The reason I am asking is that IBM will
only support WebSphere Appl serv. v6 on 11i.

So that could mean 11.23 as well right ?

11.11 is known as 11i version 1 and 11.23 is 11i version 2, so, yes, they're both 11i.
