is it free s/w / needs to purchase seperatly?
DBAs are aware of this utility?

hi,

check oracle metalink for advise on setup/configuration.

however, your DBA should definitely be aware of this utility, if he/she is a DBA.

Hi Yogi,

RMAN is only suitable if you have your database in archive mode.

RMAN comes with the RDBMS Enterprise Edition (at least)

Hi Yogesh,

RMAN (Recovery Manager) is a basic functionality of Oracle Database Server, like sqplus, exp, imp, etc. It can be found in the $ORACLE_HOME/bin directory.
You can create both offline and online database backups to disk or tape.
A better place for docs and stuff is metalink.oracle.com (Top Tech Docs) or http://www.oracle.com/technology/deploy/availability/htdocs/RMAN_Overview.htm

Nice books can be found at O'reilly and Oracle press.

It is a GREAT tool, but you have to rtfm very carefully to find out your best suitable backup strategy.

Hi Yogi,

If I recall correctly RMAN functionality is part & parcel of an Oracle 8.x RDBMS installation. It can backup be used for databases in both modes (archive logging & no archivelogging). Depending on your company backup/recovery strategy/standard most best practiced institutions use RMAN for databases running in archive logging mode. To get more detailed documentation refere to the Oracle documentation on metalink. And as previously stated, a DBA should be aware of its existence & functionality.
