I am running HP-UX 11i on an HP 9000 d250 server. On reboot, I am getting the following error in the rc.log file:

CVM, VVR - Starting Communication Daemon
Output from "/sbin/rc2.d/S094vxnm-vxnetd start":
----------------------------
Using port : 1710
EXIT CODE: 253
"/sbin/rc2.d/S094vxnm-vxnetd start" FAILED

Does anyone know what the error is and how to fix it?

Thanks
jamie

There seems to be an issue with the HP11i June 2002 release, if your hostname exceeds 8 chars, as it is unable to resolve to the correct name.

Upgrading to the Sept. 2002 release, fixes this problem.

A quick workaround would be to add your hostname to the /etc/hosts database, in a shortned 8 character way.

The problem seems to be with your hostname.

the system could not resolve the hostname properly.

check your /etc/hosts file whether you have the proper hostname specified.

Just try doing a

#nslookup <HOSTNAME of="" the="" machine="">

As mentioned this could also be due to the hostname exceeding its length.

Also revert with the output of uname -a

Thanks</HOSTNAME>

Just had this exact same error on a new HP C3700 workstation. This happened after the OS load and during the first boot.

The CDE login screen failed to start and the terminal beeped repetively.

Connected the mouse, rebooted, and all is fine.
