I've installed the oracle8 on my HP-UX system(HP-UX 11i). I've installed oracle with the option of NOT creating the database.I've created an instance already, but When I am trying to create my own database using the svrmgrl command it prompts an error saying that "ORA-12547: TNS:lost contact". This error occurs when I'm trying to use the connect internal command. I've tried to check on listener and it is ok. by the i have an oracle 7.3.4 on my system.

Regards
Allan

Allan,
I assume you have set the ORACLE_SID etc.?
Also check the requirements for 8 on 11i, especially shmmax.
After that I would refer to the Oracle metlink site for troubleshooting.
Regards

hi,

metalink note Note:115752.1 mentions about:

The need to verify your ORACLE_SID is set and exported:

For sh and ksh:
% ORACLE_SID=<SID_NAME>
% export ORACLE_SID

For csh:
% setenv ORACLE_SID <SID_NAME>

Also, why not install 8i?

regards
yogeeraj</SID_NAME></SID_NAME>

Allan, why not 9i? instead of an old 8.0 system?
Ok ...
Check value of ORACLE_SID - is it correct? Is the path pointed to by ORACLE_HOME correct? Is ORACLE_HOME/bin in your path?
If those are correct try:
tnsping <ORACLE_SID>
or tnsping80 <ORACLE_SID> (depending ...)

</ORACLE_SID></ORACLE_SID>

Hi Allan,

This error "ORA-12547: TNS:lostâ when using the svrmgrl command might happen on HP-UX 11.0 and Oracle 8i Release 2 if you do not set ORACLE_SID an environment and export it, then you will get this error message

Also check the following are set properly and exported.
ORACLE_HOME
ORACLE_SID
LD_LIBRARY_PATH
SHLIB_PATH

Attached is the note that Yogeeraj mentioned from metalink explaining resolving ORA-12547 WITH ORACLE 7.3.x to 8i on HP-UX.

Indira
