One of my UX 11.0 system started rejecting telnet sessions a few hours ago.

When you telnet to this system one will get the login prompt but no shell afterwards. The system is under no special load and the only error messages can be found in syslog

Jun 21 11:10:25 mars telnetd[20940]: getpid: peer died: Error 0
Jun 21 11:10:25 mars telnetd[20999]: getpid: peer died: Error 0
Jun 21 11:10:25 mars telnetd[20941]: getpid: peer died: Error 0
Jun 21 11:10:25 mars telnetd[21058]: getpid: peer died: Error 0
Jun 21 11:10:26 mars telnetd[20998]: getpid: peer died: Error 0
Jun 21 11:10:26 mars telnetd[21001]: getpid: peer died: Error 0
Jun 21 11:10:26 mars telnetd[20859]: getpid: peer died: Error 0

After a couple of minutes the system reacts normal again but the problem re-occurs after 1-2 minutes.

Any ideas 'bout this behaviour

Hello,

First, check to see if rpcbind is running. I have had problems in the past with this. Are you running dns? If so, make sure your resolv.conf file is at least 444 permissions. what does the entry for telnet in your inetd.conf file say? have you tried re-reading in this file (inetd -c). Can you give any other backround concerning the two machines in question? Let me know what you find.

Chris

Chris

Yes rpcbind is running
we use dns and /etc/resolv.conf has 444 perms
I'm using tcp wrapper around telnet, so inetd.conf looks like this
telnet stream tcp nowait root /etc/tcpd /usr/lbin/telnetd

I will reboot the box during the night with new values
for kernel parameters
npts
nstrpty
nstrtel

Rainer
