telnet connection

When i change my root password with command passwd, my telnet connections is not working. Does anyone know what is the problem?

Hi Jamshed,

May be your telnetd daemon is not working. Also check to see if internet services daemon is running.
/usr/sbin/inetd

Jamshed,

Are you trying to logon to telnet as root. May be you have the file /etc/securetty file that syas root login is allowed only on console. You can logon to telnet as any other user and then su - to logon as root.

Hi Jamshed,

It is a strange problem. Are you sure, your telnet is not working after the root password change. They are not related, at least to me.

What do you mean by "telnet not working"? Are you not able to login as root with the new password or the telnet prompt itself does not appear?

Please explain the problem a bit more.

Also, let us know if this is a trusted system and what is the OS version.

I am not able to login as root or another user account.
Next appear on my screen.

Try to remember your password.
I am sure that your password that you supply is not correct.

Hi jamshed,

Were you able to login properly before the password change? Please answer the below,

1) which users password did you change
2) Is this a trusted system
3) is your password having any special characters
4) What is the length of the password
5) If none of the user is able to login, then try booting to single-user mode and change the root password again
6) is your password file huge, like 600-700 user entries?
7) Is this problem only in telnet,what about the console login?
